Writing Hard, Drawing Easier
My recurring puzzle to solve is to write a sensible comic strip story (through dialogue alone) that incorporates a list of random words I'm given for that issue. Each word--with its definition--must fall on the page where it appears in the magazine. Each issue of Spider Magazine has a general theme and comes at its own specific time of year, so this can help spark ideas.
But it's tricky.
I stare at that list of random words for days. Luckily, there always seems to be one odd word that jumps out and guides me to a premise to begin. In the end, with all these elements cooking, I come up with a (I hope funny and interesting) comic strip.
Once I have the story accepted by my editor, drawing out the bugs feels like a breeze by comparison.
